FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions about the Weld Monitor
How does the Weld Monitor Unit Work ?
Answer : The Weld Monitoring Unit measures the delivered heat generating energy that goes into a weld and checks that this is within user set limits. If it isn’t, the unit indicates a fault condition. The unit incorporates precision stabilised electronics for highly repeatable measurements.
Do I need additional equipment with the Weld Monitor Unit ?
Answer : No - The Weld Monitoring Unit is normally supplied as a kit bundle that includes a universal power supply, a current shunt and all the necessary cables to quickly retrofit the system to your welding apparatus. These items can of course be purchased separately and if you prefer, you can use your own current sensing unit.
What sort of welding equipment does the Weld Monitor Unit support ?
Answer : The Weld Monitoring Unit is designed to monitor micro weld applications that utilise Capacitor Discharge, Linear DC, HFDC and Hybrid type resistance welding power supplies. In addition, depending upon the equipment type, the Weld Monitoring Unit can be use to monitor pulse arc micro joining applications.
Does the Weld Monitoring Unit support multiple welding schedules ?
Answer : Yes - The Weld Monitoring Unit provides rotary numeric settings that are adjusted to suit each weld schedule, acting as a permanent memory for each process condition. In automation applications, multiple welding schedules are readily accommodated using the same method or by capturing the measured process signals via an external analogue to digital converter.
Can I connect the Weld Monitor directly to a PLC ?
Answer : Yes - The Weld Monitoring Unit provides Weld timing signals and Upper and Lower Limit Fault signals via optically isolated channels. These signals can additionally be used to trigger data acquisition if required.
Can I prevent unauthorised changes being made to the monitor ?
Answer : Yes - The Weld Monitoring Unit is self contained in a small box. If you are concerned about unwanted interventions, then simply place the unit in a lockable box or provide a locking cover. Where possible, try to educate operators to seek process engineering help when faults occur rather than allow ad hoc changes to be made to your welding equipment.
